The rule in Lithuania is to call for one in advance if you want to pay a sensible rate. If you do take one in the street, make sure the meter is running before you depart, and if you’re taking long distance ride, negotiate a fare. Vilnius-Kaunas distance cost by taxi is around 200 Lt.

Public transport in Kaunas

Public transportation is comprised of buses, minibuses and trolleybuses. Most routes run from 05:00 until about 23:00. Tickets for them (the same type of ticket is valid for bus and trolleybus) can be purchased at any "Lietuvos Spauda" kiosk for 1.80Lt or from the driver for 2Lt. A ticket is valid only for one journey.
Minibuses are privately owned but follow similar routes to those of buses and trolleybuses – look for destinations on the card in the window. Tickets cost 2.5Lt, which you pay to the driver (you can’t by one at a post kiosk). When crowded, hand your payment via other passengers to the driver. Minibuses have no official stops so you have to stop one like a taxi.
